THE CAMP, Sunningdale. June 30/[18]87. My dear little Lion Mamma gave me your loving present as soon as she awoke this morning. I thank you for it; it will always remind me of you and of your love of rigging ships. I assure you I do not at all like being away from you on my birthday, and I think a great deal about you and our reading. As you get older you will like Tales of a Grandfather and especially if I read them with you, and we find the places on the map together. Tomorrow we shall be at home and we will finish Ivanhoe together. We saw the Queen yesterday at her Garden party, looking so happy and pleased. Grace and Reggie both have written to me. Give my kind regards to Miss Hughesden and Believe me, dear Joey, Your most affectionate father. JOS.D.HOOKER.
