My dear Prain First let me offer my sympathy -- I was aware of you being examined[?], but was not of the result. The loss of a Parent under whatever circumstances is always a telling stroke. I am as much pleased as interested & instructed by the capital Introduction you have written to your List of Bengal plants. There are many matters in it which I hope we may talk over, & which affect intimately the tack under which I am struggling to find my way.

I do not see how you could improve it -- the usage of the Linnean system is a happy thought. I did it in the Handbook of the New Zealand Flora. I am utterly at a loss to define botanically India Aqave[?], vera, & [illeg.], though recognizing these realties -- from the want of exact habitats.
