JDH advises Sir William Thiselton-Dyer not to despair of the Linnean Society. He states that it is for younger men to take the society forward. He is encouraged by the accession of new members. He has given Allman his approval of [John] Gwyn Jeffreys as the Treasurer. JDH is making geological observations in the Malverns & Cotswolds with [Reverend William Samuel] Symonds. JDH thinks tickets have been sent to 'all the men...[Thiselton-Dyer] mentions'. Either JDH or White can provide ticket to the Royal Society soiree for Mr Vines.

Dear Dyer*2
Nil desperandum, is all I can say. It is now for the younger men to put their shoulders to the wheel of the Linnean -- & they must find out how to do it, which is the initial difficulty. The Linnean, like the rest of us, has its ups as well as downs, & the accession of members is a good sign amongst the ups. Allman wrote to me about [John] Gwyn Jeffreys for Treasurer, & I wrote him hastily to the effect that he must be considered, [1 word crossed out, illeg.] or something to that effect. After much reflection I think that he deserves the position & that he will make an efficient officer, though he is not all that I like. Still if he takes it he will be a working man, & he has a good position in Science.
It is still cold here. I had a grand Geological day with [Reverend William Samuel] Symonds over
