My dear Sir,*1
I regret to say that I cannot help you in the matters referred to in your note.
It is much to be regretted that you did not respond to the calls addressed to you on the subject of your collections; & that you went away without giving any notice, leaving it to others to perform duties which you should
yourself have undertaken. The papers which have been printed upon the Arctic
collections are to be found in the current Natural History periodicals of the day, & will all appear together in the Appendix to Sir George Nares' work. The collections which you made were worked up without any assistance from you & the Government, under whose orders all
was done, gave no instructions about retaining any portion of them for you.
Truly yours | signed Jos. D. Hooker.
